Rolling stock display at 30th Street Station
AMERICA’S PASSENGER RAIL, PAST AND PRESENT – During UIC HIGHSPEED 2012, you can get an up-close look at some of America’s passenger equipment, from the 1950s through today. The cars shown here are a cross-section of Amtrak’s national fleet, plus modern commuter equipment. Amtrak's electrified Northeast Corridor (NEC) is the busiest railroad in North America, with more than 2,200 trains operating over some portion of the Washington-Boston route (457 mi/735 km) each day. More than three quarters of a million riders use the NEC every weekday, generating more than 4.9 million (almost 7.9 million km) daily passenger miles. Outside the NEC, Amtrak trains operate over almost 20,000 miles (32,000 km) of freight-owned track using diesel locomotives. The older equipment has been lovingly and painstakingly restored by Amtrak mechanics at its Beech Grove, Indiana and Bear, Delaware maintenance facilities.
